Shara, a gifted choreographer and dancer, can't find work. Together with Charlie, a camera man who wants to help Shara achieve her dream, they discover a new way for her to dance in zero gravity . . . from space! When an alien force invades, it is up to Shara to find a way to communicate and save Earth.

"The Robinsons' message -- that love and communication are what being human is really about -- is delivered with plenty of action, high-tech and character development."
- Publishers Weekly

on STARDANCE the Novel, based on the award-winning Novella

"STARDANCE is a major work not only as entertainment but as a literary masterpiece."
- Chicago Sun Times

"Larger-than-life characters, a love of dance and music, and a grand vision, with a sense of ecstasy that infuses much of the novel . . ."
- Locus Magazine

on Spider Robinson

"If one were given the task of creating Spider Robinson from scratch, the best way to do it would be to snatch James Joyce from history, force-feed him Marx Brothers films and good jazz for the better part of a decade, then turn him loose on a world badly in need of a look at itself."
- The Vancouver Sun

"Spider Robinson is the hottest writer to hit science fiction since Harlan Ellison, and he can match the master’s frenetic energy and emotional intensity, arm-break for gut-wrench.”
- The Los Angeles Times

“Nobody’s perfect, but Spider comes pretty damned close.”
- Ben Bova

"A Master!"
- Locus

"Spider Robinson is the Tom Robbins of the 21st century."
- John Varley

"Spider Robinson is a master storyteller…"
- Allen Steele

[Spider Robinson] "embodies the best of Sturgeon, Heinlein, and Asimov."
- David Gerrold

"Robinson's creative imagination is admirable."
- Publishers Weekly

Stardance novella eBook Spider Robinson Jeanne Robinson

I read this a long, long time ago when I was a teen and I loved it.

When somebody mentioned it in a recent conversation I bought it to read again, bracing myself for the usual disappointment of discovering that the book is not as good as I thought is was when I was young.

Didn't happen. This novella is every bit as good as I remember it being - if anything it is better because I have matured and can now appreciate aspects I did not notice when I was younger.

The storyline is deceptively simple. Shara wants to dance. It is the future - there are new ways to do that. Shara invents a whole new form of dance, a new way to communicate through dance. How she does this and the sacrifices she has to make to reach her goal would be an engrossing story in itself. But the Robinsons took that story and lifted it into a whole new category.

It is a relatively short story, being a novella. It has the substance and impact of a much longer book. I recommend you buy it, and let reading it be a gift to yourself. It is one of those books; the ones you are glad to have read. The kind you want to recommend to people you like.

Stardance novella eBook Spider Robinson Jeanne Robinson Reviews

Stardance is the title of a book published many years ago that included the contents of this e-book as well as another part. To finish reading the story I had to dig out my paperback, and let me tell you, once you're used to an e-reader, paper books seem incredibly barbaric. You have to hold them, often with both hands! There are shadows! But I digress.

The actual contents of this e-book are good. Just be warned that you aren't replacing your physical book.
The first of many wonderful books. Please read the reference to Skylab. This book inspired many to continue the search for the stars and also Freefall Dance.
When I bought this in paper form, it included this novella as the first section, and followed it with the sequel Stardancers. I'd never read the original novella in this form. The difference is the denouement, but it's only a page. It's good to have the original.
I first read this in the 70s, and several times since. It's a great human story. It was uplifting, and sad. The Audible version is read by the author. The contrast between the story being read and reading it very much improved my experience.
I have read this book a few years ago and I loved it as much as I do now. Recommend for everyone.
Spider Robinson has the most confounded habit of creating worlds and people i would love to know. I have read this book at least 6 times and it never fails to touch me.
Love this novella which is basically just the first episode of the three part Stardancer series. I great tale of future artistry in dance in freefall. I love how all the characters were developed by this husband and wife writing team. I especially love Spider Robinson's wit and writing style as though the whole narrative is a gossipy conversation in a bar.
