What do you get when an Alaskan Grizzly Bear named Corky tries to make a normal life among humans in Seattle? Unemployment, failed relationships, therapy and the occasional pint of Guinness. Follow the missteps and misadventures of life as an outsider through the adult eyes of a bear trying to make his way in a cold world. Anthropomorphism hasn’t been this fun since Chewbacca.

Corky Bear Life as an Outsider edition by AC Collins Claire Jackson Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a quirky set of stories, written in blog post form, collected as a book, expressing what it is like to be an outsider in a new town (in this case, Seattle). The quirks come in, as the story is told from the point of view of a bear, in fact, a bear who likes toilet paper and the taste of cats. Good for several laughs, but don't expect this to be appropriate for younger kids, as the artwork on the cover could deceive you (although the fact the bear is wearing a tie with no pants should be a slight clue).

Corky Bear Life as an Outsider edition by AC Collins Claire Jackson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Enjoyed it, even re-read it. A small gem. Human introspection channeled through ursine sensibilities has not earned a place among serious literary trope, neither before or after this offering, but I was really wrong to take the book as a lark. Within animal themed literature, this story of Corky Bear and his candid perspectives makes no pretense to the canon dominated by the tempting, speaking serpent. The lumbering bear who eats his date is not comparable to an artful, compassionate spider. The writing does not hearken the gravity of London's howling wolves. The views are less sweeping than the systematic satire of Orwell's overtly political pigs. Instead, and fortunately, the views and comments are more ordinary and mundane. The wit and also wisdom are as digestible to the reader as the annoying date and cats were to Corky. The character is a bear, but he generally resonates as a human dressed in bear clothing. Although the author has researched bear details, we are never actually confused into believing Corky is a real bear. He is too familiar for that. The introspection is a familiar vein shared by those of us who have read or thought before. It is not an introspection on the same shelf as Portrait of an Artist, Notes From the Underground, Confessions, or Meditations, but it is an introspection, and because of that we get to share someone's ideas with them, which is always a worthy experience. A modest offering from a first time author, it delivers more than expected. Truly, a small gem, a happy find.
Short and sweet....well I wouldn't necessarily say "sweet," short and funny is more like it. Definitely not a children's book about the day in the life of Corky the Bear from Seattle. I love the therapy sessions Corky attends to help cope with being a bear in the world of humans. Can't wait for more works from this author!!
First, let me say, this book is not for young children. While it is not crude, it is just written for and older generation. I would give a Lexile level of about 35. That being said, I really enjoyed this short little book about life as an outsider. I believe that everyone has felt like an outsider at some point in their life. Corky puts a unique spin on what it truly means to be an outsider. The humor in the book is well written and tasteful, yet pointed and witty. I really enjoyed the read, and can not wait for Corky's next adventure!
